Project
Keith has people coming by his yard and taking pictures all the time now that he’s installed a very low water use landscape. He replaced a lawn that he had to water three to four times a week, year-round. Now he waters infrequently yet has a beautiful garden. There is a wide variety of plants, different shapes, colors, sizes, and textures that keep it very interesting to view. Keith’s use of succulents made it easy to grow and propagate. Now he gives away cuttings to those who ask. And his plantings are constantly changing to keep the design always interesting.

2nd place winner: Vicki H.
To save water, Vicki and her husband started with a simple plan to remove their lawn in favor of a rock garden. However, this turned into a rock swale for drainage, local mulch from El Corazon to cover severe Jacaranda surface roots and eye appealing, water wise plants. They built a sitting area with a fire pit and semi-privacy fence that also became part of the aesthetics of their new front lawn. This has opened a new way to meet neighbors.
Plants Used: Society Garlic, Juniper, Little John Bottlebrush, Acacia, New Zealand Flax, Bougainvillea, Lavender, Heavenly Bamboo, Pigmy Palm, Creeping Thyme,
3rd place winner: Laurie M.
This project for Laurie’s Homeowners Association’s property is a gem. She volunteered her time to remediate a poorly landscaped entrance with boulders, gravel, and new plants to create an environment she and her neighbors could be proud of. Resourcefully using found materials, and repurposing some plants held the costs down and she did all the work herself. Now there’s a bench out front for people to enjoy beautiful sunsets and her efforts have inspired many to work in their yard to make it more appealing as well!
Plants Used: Ice Plant, Yuccas, Sweet Pea plants, Pampas Grass, Candy Apple ground cover, Geraniums, Asparagus Ferns, Yellow Daisy type flowers, Gazanias, Lavender, Purple Sea Lavender, Verbena, Royal Velvet flowers
